Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967.
Today I bought John Mayer’s new album, Born and Raised. I had been streaming it on iTunes for the last 5 days, impatiently waiting for the day when I would no longer have to memorize the points in the play bar where each song starts and finishes. Although it’s new on my shelf, I think I love it. It’s different from his previous albums and his new musical direction is no surprise, given the hints of his recent influences (Dylan, Neil Young and the Crosby & Nash collaboration).
Lyrically it’s different too, which I was surprised at. After the first listen, I noticed the intensity pick up at one particular song… ‘Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967’.
This song had me piecing together the story like I was reconstructing the broken memories of some previous life…
(I think) It’s about a man who, despite everyone’s lack of belief in him, learns how to ride a submarine, and goes away in it. The ending is unclear whether he lives or dies; I don’t know if it’s emotional victory or just emotional. But I’m ok with not knowing, and, after a few listens, that unsettling feeling becomes kind of addictive. Almost straight away, I could picture what he looked like, could hear how he spoke, and knew of the kind of person he was. I found a sound clip of John explaining to an audience about his connection with the character, saying how he ‘really got to know him’ and how he ‘lived with him’ for a while. Although he admits that the story is fiction, John goes on to suggest that maybe it’s not… instead just an unclassified, extended metaphor that came from his subconscious? Either way, this character radiates relatable qualities. And that’s the best kind there is.
The story really lends itself to the writing style…that typical folky structure that hits a little harder with every chorus it passes through. Will this be the song I listen to over and over until I hunger for a sequel… or a prequel? Or maybe a live version will suffice?
I’m two listens away from considering this one of his better albums… I’m seven listens away from considering this his best album.
